Childcare & babysitting services in the Netherlands

Dutch childcare comes in more shapes than most new arrivals expect, and the word you need depends on the shape. A gastouder is a registered childminder looking after a small group, usually in their own home, matched to you through a gastouderbureau. A nanny or au pair works in yours. A babysitting agency covers the evenings in between. Eight are listed here, from app-based hourly sitters to IND-recognised au pair placement. Six work in English and seven in Dutch, and all eight come to your home, in Amsterdam, Amstelveen, Diemen, Weesp and Zaandam.

Common questions

Answered from what is actually listed on this page, not from a template.

What is a gastouder, and how is it different from a nursery?

A gastouder is a registered childminder who looks after a small group of children, usually at their own home rather than in a nursery. You are matched through a gastouderbureau, which handles the contract, the checks and the paperwork for childcare allowance (kinderopvangtoeslag). Two gastouderbureaus are listed on this page.

How much does a babysitter or nanny cost in the Netherlands?

Published starting prices on this page run from about €7.45 an hour for app-based babysitting up to around €850 for au pair and nanny placement packages. Agencies charge for the match and the admin on top of what the sitter or nanny is paid, so ask which of the two a quoted figure covers.

Can I find an English-speaking babysitter?

Six of the eight agencies listed here work in English, and several specialise in international and visiting families, including holiday nannies for parents staying in Amsterdam or another Dutch city for a short trip. Seven also work in Dutch, which matters if you would rather your children hear Dutch at home.
