Pregnancy & postnatal support services in the Netherlands

Finding a verloskundige, arranging kraamzorg and working out what actually happens after the birth is a lot to organise in a system that may be new to you. This page collects the Dutch practices that cover that stretch: midwifery practices and birth centres, prenatal and childbirth preparation courses, maternity care agencies, pelvic physiotherapy and pre- and postnatal yoga. Eight are listed so far, seven of them working in English as well as Dutch, in Amsterdam, Amstelveen, Haarlem and Badhoevedorp. Six see you at their own practice, four will come to your home, and three run sessions online.

Common questions

Answered from what is actually listed on this page, not from a template.

Do pregnancy and postnatal services in the Netherlands speak English?

Seven of the eight practices listed here work in English, and six also work in Dutch. Dutch midwifery practices, kraamzorg agencies and childbirth courses are used to international parents, in and around Amsterdam especially — but it is worth confirming when you book, especially for a course that runs as a group.

What is kraamzorg, and do I arrange it myself?

Kraamzorg is Dutch postnatal maternity care: a maternity nurse comes to your home for several hours a day during the first week after the birth. You register with an agency yourself, usually around 12 to 16 weeks of pregnancy, and Dutch basic health insurance covers most of the cost. Two of the agencies listed here work specifically with English-speaking families.

Can I be seen at home, or does everything happen at a practice?

Both. Six of the eight listings see you at their own practice or birth centre, four offer home visits, and three run sessions online, which is useful for a prenatal course if you are still abroad. Published starting prices on this page run from about €24 for a group class to €120 for a private session.
