Therapists, counsellors & parenting coaches in the Netherlands

When a child is anxious, a teenager has stopped talking, or the two of you cannot agree on how to parent, this is the page. It lists the Dutch practices that work with children, teenagers and parents: a kinderpsycholoog or GZ-psychologist for assessment and therapy, integrative child therapists, speech and language therapists working in English, couples and family counsellors, and parenting coaches. Eight are listed, seven of them working in English, in Amsterdam, Amstelveen, Haarlem, Diemen, Zaandam, Purmerend and Landsmeer. Seven see you at their own practice, four offer online sessions and two will visit your home.

Common questions

Answered from what is actually listed on this page, not from a template.

Can I see a child psychologist in English?

Seven of the eight practices listed here work in English, and six also work in Dutch. Several are BIG-registered psychologists or psychotherapists, which is the Dutch professional register you will be asked about if you come through a GP referral.

Do I need a GP referral to start therapy?

For insured mental health care in the Netherlands you normally need a referral from your huisarts. Practices on this page that work privately can often see you without one, at your own cost: published starting rates here run from about €45 to €206 per session. Ask the practice directly, because the answer depends on how they are contracted.

Can sessions happen online or at home?

Four of the eight practices offer online sessions and two will come to your home, while seven see you at their own practice. For younger children, in person usually works better. For parent coaching and couples work, online is common, makes the scheduling far easier, and puts a practice in another part of the country within reach.
