Family lawyers, mediators & financial advice in the Netherlands

Divorce and separation, a parenting plan the court will accept, child maintenance, wills and inheritance, family reunification and residence permits, Dutch tax returns and the childcare allowance nobody ever explains properly. Nine firms are listed here: family law advocaten, registered mediators, cross-border and inheritance specialists, immigration lawyers, and a tax service that works in plain English. All nine work in English and seven also in Dutch, with offices in Amsterdam and Utrecht. Published starting rates run from about €75 to €255 an hour, and almost all of them see you at their own office.

Common questions

Answered from what is actually listed on this page, not from a template.

Are there English-speaking family lawyers in the Netherlands?

All nine firms listed here work in English, and seven also work in Dutch, from offices in Amsterdam and Utrecht. Several are cross-border specialists, which matters when one parent is not Dutch, when a move abroad is on the table, or when an estate sits in more than one country.

Do I need a lawyer or a mediator to divorce in the Netherlands?

A Dutch divorce is filed at court by a lawyer, but you can go together to one mediator who drafts the settlement and the parenting plan, which is usually cheaper and less adversarial than each side instructing its own advocaat. Several firms on this page are registered as both. If you have children under 18, a parenting plan is compulsory.

Who can help with Dutch tax and childcare allowance?

One of the listings here is a tax service that handles Dutch income tax returns, the 30% ruling and kinderopvangtoeslag — the childcare allowance — for international residents, in English. The family law firms on this page deal with the financial side of a separation, such as maintenance, pensions and the family home, rather than annual tax filing.
