About Almere

Almere is the newest city in the Netherlands — the whole of it built since the 1970s on land that was sea — and it was planned around families, which shows. Everything is wide: the cycle paths are separated from the roads, the parks are large, and the beaches on the Weerwater and the Gooimeer are within the city. It is twenty minutes by train from Amsterdam Centraal. The flip side of a planned city is that it is spread out, so a car or a bike helps more here than it does in an older town.
