days out, tried and tested
Kindertheater is a Dutch habit worth picking up: a forty-minute show with an age marker on it, at eleven on a Sunday, and everyone home by lunch. Fifteen stages are listed here. Twelve are in Amsterdam — Theater De Krakeling, which programmes almost nothing but children's work, the Marionette Theater, the Black Cat, Plein Theater, Bijlmer Parktheater, CREA, DeLaMar and Het Concertgebouw among them — two are in Amstelveen, including the open-air Bostheater, and one is the attic theatre in Sint Pancras. Ten of the fifteen are wheelchair accessible and have an accessible bathroom.

Family Experiences

Every town with something in this category has its own page. The number is what is listed there today.
Most of it is, and it matters less than you would expect. Puppet and marionette work — the Amsterdam Marionette Theater, the Black Cat, the Amstelveens Poppentheater — carries the story visually, and families who speak no Dutch follow it without trouble. Music needs no translation at all, which is why Het Concertgebouw's family programme is the easiest first outing. Spoken-word theatre for older children is the one place the language does get in the way.
Dutch venues publish an age marker on every show — 2+, 4+, 6+, 8+ — and they are meant seriously rather than as a suggestion. De Krakeling's season runs from 2+ upwards; the puppet theatres sit mostly in the 2–6 band; the concert hall's family concerts and the bigger houses aim at six and over. Each listing here shows the age groups the venue itself names, and links through to what is actually on.
Ten of the fifteen listed here are tagged wheelchair accessible and carry an accessible bathroom, which is high for this kind of building — the modern houses, DeLaMar, CREA, Bijlmer Parktheater and the Amsterdamse Bostheater are the reliable ones. Small studio and attic stages in older buildings are the exception, and a buggy usually has to be left in the foyer either way. Each listing carries whatever the venue itself publishes.
