Cinemas for kids in the Netherlands

Dutch cinemas dub family films as standard — look for "Nederlands gesproken" — and usually show the original with subtitles alongside, which is the listing to hunt for if your children are still learning the language. Eight are here. Five are in Amsterdam: Studio/K in Oost with its café, Rialto in De Pijp, Het Ketelhuis at the Westergasfabriek and Eye across the IJ. The others are Cinebergen in Bergen, the Filmhuis in Alkmaar and the Vue in Hoorn. All eight are wheelchair accessible with an accessible bathroom, and seven serve food.

Questions parents ask

Are children's films shown in English?

Both versions usually run. Dutch cinemas list a dubbed showing as "Nederlands gesproken" and the original as "originele versie" or OV, generally with Dutch subtitles. The arthouse cinemas here — Rialto, Het Ketelhuis and Studio/K in Amsterdam, the Filmhuis in Alkmaar — tend to keep an original-language family slot at weekends. Check the cinema's own programme, which every listing links to.

Which cinemas are good with small children?

Studio/K in Amsterdam is the one parents name first: a café, space to move and a relaxed attitude to noise. Het Ketelhuis and Rialto both run morning family screenings. All eight listed here have an accessible bathroom and step-free access, and seven serve food, so an early showing can absorb lunch as well.

Do cinemas run special screenings for families?

Yes — weekend mornings are the standard slot for children's programming, and several of these cinemas also take part in Cinekid, the national children's film festival held each October. Eye Film Museum runs its own family programme alongside the exhibitions.
