days out, tried and tested
A speelcafé or kids' café is the rare place designed so that the adults can finish a conversation: a play corner in view of the tables, high chairs as standard, and staff who do not mind crumbs. They exist in towns all over the Netherlands, but only three are listed here so far, all of them in Amsterdam — the Children's Cooking Café, where children cook rather than colour in, plus VROG and the WOW Family Center. All three have high chairs, two have an indoor play area and two have changing tables. It is a small category and we would rather say so.
4 kids cafe in the Netherlands
Every town with something in this category has its own page. The number is what is listed there today.
A café with a supervised or in-view play area, built so that a coffee with a toddler is possible. In Dutch you will see speelcafé or kindercafé. All three listed here have high chairs and two have an enclosed indoor play area, which is the difference between a café that tolerates children and one that is designed for them.
Two of the three state that they have changing tables, and two are tagged stroller accessible. That is the practical test for anywhere you are taking a baby, and it is listed on each venue page. Beyond these three, the museum cafés and the food halls in the other categories here are the reliable fallback.
Because this is one of the thinner corners of the directory, and every listing so far is in Amsterdam. New venues are added every week, and a café anywhere in the Netherlands can add itself for free through the listing form. In the meantime the indoor playgrounds category has several venues with proper cafés attached.
