Purmerend is twenty minutes north of Amsterdam and is what a Dutch market town looks like when it has grown into a commuter town: a compact old centre with a Thursday market, ringed by post-war neighbourhoods with a lot of green between them. The Purmerbos and the Beemster polder — a UNESCO-listed grid of seventeenth-century reclaimed land — are on its doorstep. For families it is chiefly a practical place, well served by buses into the city and by the services listed here.
