Hoorn is an old West Frisian harbour town on the Markermeer, an hour north of Amsterdam by train, and one of the pleasanter places in North Holland to spend a warm day with children. The historic harbour is small enough to walk around in twenty minutes, there is a swimming beach on the edge of town, and the steam tram to Medemblik is a genuine day out. Out of season it is very quiet, which is either the attraction or the problem depending on the ages involved.
