Plein Theater presents Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam, a concert series for contemporary music, with brand-new compositions by leading musicians as its ingredients. Ensemble SCALA, a Dutch group, specializes in microtonal music, which uses more pitches than the usual twelve tones per octave. The ensemble was founded in 2010 by the Huygens-Fokker Foundation and explores alternative tuning systems, with particular attention to the 31-tone system of the Fokker organ.
Three of the ensemble’s musicians play this concert: Stefan Gerritsen on microtonal guitar, Anne Veinberg on 96-tone piano and keyboards, and Ere Lievonen on 31-tone organ. Together they take the audience along surprising timbres, new harmonic landscapes and the possibilities of microtonality.
Good to know: Plein Theater is at Sajetplein 39, 1091 DB Amsterdam.
