At Plein Theater in Amsterdam, a cheeky kids’ show with funny, recognisable songs about mess, telling the story of Princess Reutemeteut. It plays out in the Palace of spic and span, the cleanest palace you have ever seen, where all 348 rooms are spotless. Well, nearly all of them: one bedroom in the whole palace is a bit less tidy, the stink-hole of Princess Reutemeteut. The big question the show asks is how you deal with the mess in your head, the mess around you and the mess of your child. Written by Bas van de Ven, Cristel van Kuik and Suus Hoppenbrouwers, directed by Bas van de Ven, performed by Suus Hoppenbrouwers, with scenography by Cristel van Kuik and music by Bas van de Ven and Lennert Klaui.
Theaterkrant’s reviewer wrote that Suus Hoppenbrouwers flourishes playing all the different characters, with sharp comic timing, switching seemingly effortlessly from stately queen to broad-Amsterdam tosti, and that her high tempo and density of jokes keeps both adult and young visitors engaged. The review adds that in a performance where cheerful chaos can arise, for example a sock fight with the audience, she still holds the attention of even the youngest viewers.
