Where are the children’s concerts?

The Concertgebouw and Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ in Amsterdam carry a large share of the programme — family concerts and the orchestra’s own children’s series at one, hands-on SoundLAB workshops at the other. Smaller venues add dance and sensory music for the under-fives. Whatever is currently on sale appears on this page with its date, venue, town and age, and links through to the venue’s own box office.

Are any of them free?

Some are. Lunchtime and competition concerts open to children turn up here whenever one is scheduled, and community dance sessions are often free or close to it. The quickest way to see them is the Free toggle in the filter bar, which narrows this page to whatever costs nothing today — worth checking before you commit to a paid ticket.

What age is a children’s concert suitable for?

Everything on this page carries an age band, and they are not interchangeable. Sensory music sessions are written for babies and toddlers up to about four and expect noise and movement; family concerts usually start at six and ask for a bit of sitting still; SoundLAB-style workshops tend to want seven and up because there is real equipment involved. Music & dance events for kids in the Netherlands

A kinderconcert is rarely a scaled-down adult concert: it is usually forty-five minutes, built around one idea, and designed so that nobody has to sit perfectly still. Two Amsterdam halls are regular anchors here — the Concertgebouw, whose family and children’s concerts run through the season, and Muziekgebouw, whose SoundLAB workshops put instruments in children’s hands rather than on a stage. Around them sit sensory sound sessions for babies and under-fours, and weekly dance classes for peuters and kleuters. Ages are printed on everything, because the gap between a 2+ and a 6+ concert is enormous.
