Baby & toddler activities in the Netherlands

The under-four programme, which in practice means classes rather than outings. Peuteractiviteiten run in weekly blocks in towns all over the Netherlands — in Amsterdam at venues such as WOW Family Center, OT301 and City Farm Osdorp: baby sensory classes with lights, music and a great deal of lying on a mat; toddler sessions that add movement and instruments; parent-and-child dance and drama mornings; and farm and play mornings for the ones who have just started walking. An adult stays for all of it. Sessions are short by design, and most will let you try one before you sign up for a block.

Good to know

What is there for babies under one?

A surprising amount. Sensory classes are written specifically for pre-crawling babies — soft lights, live or recorded music, textures to touch, and a room where crying is entirely expected. They usually run in the morning and last around forty-five minutes, which is about the limit of anyone’s attention. Several venues run consecutive time slots so you can pick the one that fits a nap.

Do toddler classes have to be booked as a block?

Often, yes. The weekly sessions in this category typically sell as a term or a block of six to ten weeks, because the class is built to develop over the run. Most providers will sell a single trial session first, which is worth doing — babies have opinions. Drop-in play and farm mornings are the exception and take you whenever you arrive.

Can I bring an older sibling?

Sometimes, and it is always worth asking rather than assuming. A structured sensory or dance class is usually one adult to one child, and an older sibling in the room changes it for everybody. Drop-in mornings and farm sessions are far more relaxed about it. Where a provider has a firm policy it is on their booking page, which every listing links to.
