About this event

Artist Phil Buehler from New York presents Wall of Tears at Plein Theater in Amsterdam. The installation is a memorial to 18,457 children killed in Gaza. It lists the names of children in the order they were killed between October 7, 2023 and July 19, 2025. The first name is Wesam Iyad Mohammed Abu Fsaife, a 14-year-old boy. The last is Sabah Omar Saad al-Masri, an eight-year-old girl. The work was first displayed in Brooklyn, New York on January 29, 2026 and has been shown around the world, including Australia, London, San Francisco, Mexico, and New Jersey. It comes to Amsterdam for the first time.

The installation will be shown as a public artwork on the 10 meter wide outdoor wall of Plein Theater. The opening is on October 15 at 17:00. Rows of names are punctuated by photos and stories of individual children, drawing on reports by the Guardian and Washington Post. Artist Phil Buehler says that from a distance it looks like almost an abstract painting and draws people in. Then you see the names of children killed in Gaza since 7 October, thousands stretching down the wall. He hopes people are drawn in further to see the faces and read the stories, with faces full of joy and hope from graduations, birthday parties, and family gatherings. He reflects that you can’t not think about your own kids and families, and hopes it might lead people to think about how they might help, even just by taking a photo of the mural and passing it along on social media or to friends. The work is a heartbreaking and powerful piece that speaks to our shared humanity.

Good to know: The opening is on October 15 at 17:00. RSVP.
