At Theater De Krakeling, Mata Hari Returns brings the story of Mata Hari back to life. It is raw, honest, poetic and full of fire, with a swinging four-piece live band.
The show follows two women, Mata Hari and her daughter Nonnie. They barely saw each other in life and come together after death. Nonnie tries to understand her mother’s bizarre life. The story asks whether they can find each other or whether this drives them further apart.
The musical journey goes from Leeuwarden to the former Dutch East Indies and to the firing squad in France. Four musicians create a rousing and moving soundtrack driven by percussion, electronics, electric guitar and bass. The music carries the story and makes it move and rub. The story is about feminism, strength and vulnerability, from a gruesome past to a new beginning. Writer Melissa Knollenburg and director Nita Kersten bring her story to the here and now from a female perspective.
