Is storytime in Dutch or in English?

Most regular voorlezen sessions are in Dutch, which many international parents use deliberately — half an hour of a native reader is worth a lot to a child in a Dutch school. English-language storytime does happen, at the library branches and at bookshops with an English children’s section, and where a session is in English the listing says so. If it is silent, assume Dutch.

Rarely. Storytime is normally drop-in: you arrive a few minutes early, sit on the floor with everyone else, and that is the whole procedure. The exceptions are author visits and book launches, which can be popular enough to need a free reservation. Each listing links to the shop or library page, which will say if a seat has to be claimed.

What age is storytime for?

The sweet spot is about two to six. Under two, most children enjoy the room more than the story, which is fine — nobody minds a wandering toddler at these. Over six, look for author events and illustration workshops instead, which are pitched at children who read for themselves. Individual listings carry the organiser’s own age guidance.

Voorlezen — being read to — is something of a national habit in the Netherlands, with its own Voorleesdagen in January and a Kinderboekenweek in October. This page collects the sessions: weekend storytime at children’s bookshops such as De Kinderboekwinkel in Amsterdam, reading mornings at library branches, author and illustrator visits, and the occasional book-launch morning where somebody draws while they read. Sessions are usually short, often free or a couple of euros, and almost always drop-in. Best for roughly two to six, though a good reader will hold a wider room than that.
