In this former town hall the history of the town is told: from fishing village, strategically placed between the lakes, to market town between the drainings of the Beemster, the Purmer and the Wormer.
The museum also shows early work by the architects and designers J.J.P. Oud and Mart Stam and the designer Jac. Jongert, all born in Purmerend, and it holds the largest collection of Purmerend art nouveau pottery from the period 1895–1907. Temporary exhibitions run all year, on themes tied to the history of the town and the region, to fine art or to ceramics.
The adjoining museum shop and VVV Purmerend carry maps, leaflets, cycling and walking routes, local products and books. Open Tuesday to Friday 10:00–16:00, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays 12:00–16:00; closed on Mondays, 1 January, Easter Sunday, King's Day, Whit Sunday and 25 December.
