Subtropical Swim Paradises Ranked: Tikibad & Friends

Somewhere around February, when it’s been grey for three weeks straight and the kids have cabin fever, half of Amsterdam starts googling “subtropisch zwembad.” These are the big indoor water parks, kept around 30°C year-round, with slides, wave pools, and enough water surface to burn off a full day of pent-up energy regardless of what’s happening outside. We’ve taken our kids to several of them now, and they are not interchangeable. Some are built for teenagers who want speed, some work better with a toddler in arm floats, and one is genuinely the biggest of its kind in the Benelux.

This is a ranking, not just a list, based on what actually makes a subtropical swim paradise worth the drive: slide variety, whether toddlers have their own safe zone, and how far you have to travel from Amsterdam to get there. If you want the shorter, local pools too, our guide to the best swimming pools for kids in the Netherlands covers those.

1. Tikibad at Duinrell, Wassenaar

Tikibad is the one that gets mentioned first for a reason. It’s the largest water park in the Benelux, with 21 slides between the indoor and outdoor sections and over 1.5 kilometres of slide track combined. There’s a wave pool, a lazy river you can float the whole family down at once, and a separate kids’ area called Playa with four gentler slides and water no deeper than 15 centimetres, so it works even with a nervous four-year-old who isn’t ready for the big stuff yet. The outdoor pool only runs in the warmer months (23 May to 27 September 2026), but the indoor Tikibad is open all year, water kept above 30°C regardless of the season.

It’s about 45 minutes from Amsterdam by car, or roughly 1 hour 20 minutes by train and bus if you’re going without one. Duinrell sells Tikibad tickets separately from the amusement park next door, so you don’t have to do both in one visit, though plenty of families do turn it into a full day out. Check Duinrell’s own site for current ticket prices and exact hours before you go, they shift by season.

2. Aqua Mundo, Center Parcs Park Zandvoort

If Tikibad feels like a proper day trip, Aqua Mundo at Park Zandvoort is the one you can realistically do as an afternoon plan. It’s the closest of the Aqua Mundo locations to Amsterdam, around 35 to 45 minutes by car or about 30 minutes by train to Zandvoort itself. Inside the tropical dome there’s a wave pool that starts shallow and deepens as you walk back, a wildwaterbaan (rapids channel) for the older kids, and two slides, a tube slide and a wider open one that starts inside the dome and loops back in after a stretch outside. There’s a sauna and steam bath tucked in a quieter corner if one parent wants ten minutes of peace while the other does slide laps, and a dedicated kinder-doe-bad for the smallest swimmers.

Center Parcs sells day tickets to Aqua Mundo even if you’re not staying overnight at the park, you don’t need to book a bungalow to swim. Book ahead online, prices vary by day and time of year, and it does sell out on weekends and school holidays.

3. Aqua Mundo, Center Parcs De Eemhof

Out in Zeewolde, roughly 45 minutes to an hour from Amsterdam depending on traffic on the A6, Aqua Mundo De Eemhof is the pick if your kids are older and want more than a lazy float. It has a Flow Rider, an artificial standing wave where older kids can try bodyboarding or surfing, which nothing else on this list offers. There’s also the Turbo Twister, a 154-metre slide you go down in a rubber ring through funnels and curves, plus a Duo Racer for siblings who want to race each other head-to-head, and a wildwaterbaan that starts in the outdoor pool and winds its way back inside. Younger kids get their own play pool and there’s an outdoor pool too when the weather cooperates. The wellness corner, whirlpools and a couple of massage-jet baths, is worth knowing about if you’re bringing a partner and want to split the day between chasing kids and actually relaxing.

Like Zandvoort, day tickets are sold without needing a park stay, and the same advice applies: book online in advance rather than turning up and hoping.

4. Aqua Mundo, Center Parcs De Kempervennen

This one’s a proper drive, about 1 hour 45 minutes from Amsterdam down near Eindhoven, so it only makes sense as part of a weekend rather than a spontaneous rainy Tuesday. What you get for the trip is one of the bigger and more varied Aqua Mundo setups: a wave pool, a 62-metre slide, a genuine wildwaterbaan, and a snorkel pool where kids can paddle among fake tropical fish, which is a nice change of pace from straight sliding. There’s a sauna and jacuzzi zone for the adults. If you’re already heading south for a weekend away near Eindhoven, it’s worth building the swim in rather than making the drive just for the pool.

Picking the right subtropical swim paradise for your family

For a first visit with young kids and no car, Zandvoort wins on convenience, it’s the shortest trip and has a proper toddler pool. For the widest range of slides in one building, nothing beats Tikibad, and the fact that it runs year-round indoors makes it the easiest one to plan around. If your kids are past the toddler stage and want speed and a real wave to ride, De Eemhof’s Flow Rider and Turbo Twister are hard to top. Kempervennen only makes sense if you’re already making a weekend of it further south. Whichever subtropical swim paradise you pick, plan for a full day, changing, showering, and drying off afterward eats more time than you’d think.

A few practical notes that apply everywhere on this list: bring your own towels (rentals exist but queue up), pack swim nappies if you’ve got a toddler still in them since regular nappies aren’t allowed in the water, and expect lockers to need a €1 or €2 coin or a wristband deposit. None of these places take walk-ins without a booking during busy periods, especially weekends and the voorjaarsvakantie (spring break) when every parent in the country has the same idea you do.

FAQ

Which subtropical swim paradise is best for toddlers?

Tikibad’s Playa area is the safest bet, water no deeper than 15cm and slides sized for small kids. Aqua Mundo Park Zandvoort’s kinder-doe-bad is a close second and has the shortest drive from Amsterdam.

Do you need to book ahead?

Yes, especially on weekends and school holidays. All four of these sell timed tickets online and do sell out, turning up without a booking is a real risk of being turned away.

Can you visit Aqua Mundo without staying at Center Parcs?

Yes. Center Parcs sells day tickets to Aqua Mundo separately from park accommodation at all three locations covered here.

Is the water actually kept warm?

Yes, subtropical pools are kept around 30°C or above year-round, that’s the whole point of the “subtropical” label, it’s meant to feel like summer regardless of the weather outside.
