Het Concertgebouw’s Grote Zaal hosts a family Christmas concert of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker on Sunday 13 December, 11:00 to 12:00. The Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie plays, Sander Teepen conducts and Dzifa Kuzenuh narrates.
The story gets a modern, bold retelling from writer Miriam Bouwens and director Yvonne van den Eerenbeemt. They ask, for instance, why a princess dress shouldn’t be swapped for a judo suit. Ella wakes in the middle of the night on Christmas Eve, the toys begin to dance and the nutcracker under the Christmas tree turns into a real prince who takes her on an adventure in which sweets come to life.
The music is Tchaikovsky’s, a string of classical hits including the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, the Pas de deux and the March of the Tin Soldiers.
Good to know: The concert has no interval.
