About Haarlem

Haarlem is fifteen minutes by train from Amsterdam Centraal and feels a century quieter. The Grote Markt is the centre of it, the Spaarne runs through it, and the dunes and the beach at Bloemendaal and Zandvoort are a short bus ride west. It is a comfortable town to do on foot with children: the historic centre is compact and largely car-free, the museums are small enough to finish, and the hofjes — the hidden almshouse gardens — are a good way to break up a walk when everyone has had enough.
